Objective
The objective of “The OMazing Race” is to place students from different ethnicities, religions, ages, and other descriptive attributes in an environment where they have the opportunity to explore their perspectives and opinions about people seemingly unlike themselves. Additionally, these students will be placed in a situation where they have to function as a team in order to win a high-paced competition. Through the experience of engaging in intimate dialogue with a diverse group of people and working as a cohesive unit to accomplish a goal, these participants will:
• Learn to be respectful and appreciative of characteristics which make people seem different from one another.
• Experience personal growth at a level which inspires them to step outside of their normal comfort zone and make themselves available to experience relationships with people from different backgrounds, ethnicities and cultures.
• Feel compelled to share their experience with friends and family; therefore, educating even those who did not participate.
Event Design:
The OMazing Race will consist of 20 teams with 4 students per team. Teams will be assembled by a committee and consist of four people from different ethnicities, sexes, religions, sexual orientations, and other descriptive attributes.
Friday, September 14
All students selected will attend an orientation on the scope and rules of the event, participate in a group exercise, and eat dinner with fellow participants. Afterwards, each team will gather separately with a moderator and students will have the opportunity to learn about one another and explore their ideas and perspectives on diversity and race.
Saturday, September 15
Teams will compete in a scavenger hunt on the Ole Miss campus. Teammates will work together to find and collect a specific number of hidden flags. The location of the flags will be revealed through clues found at each preceding hidden flag. There will be a grand prize of $2,000 to the winning team. Prizes will also be awarded to 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place finishers.
All teams will have a separate and predetermined starting point. Team names (i.e. Team Kinard, Team Ventress) will determine starting locations. At a synchronized time, all teams will begin searching for their first flag. Teams will move from one flag location to the next in a sequential order. The team who collects all the flags first and returns to their starting point will win the grand prize. Other finishing places will be based on time of completion. There is a 3-hour time limit to the competition. A program will follow the competition to announce the awards and close the event.
