About Us
Mission:
Respect Mississippi is a student organization designed to educate students at the University of Mississippi about past and present issues of diversity and inequality. In both learning about and effecting change for greater tolerance, three “pillars of mission” shall be established:
1. Inquiry and Dialogue
2. Service
3. Policy
Structure:
For the 2007-2008 school year, Respect Mississippi’s short-term structure will be as follows:
1. A three-member executive group to be designated “Directors” will be elected by the general membership of the group.
2. General membership shall include attendees of Respect Mississippi dialogue meetings as well as students active in the planning and execution of Respect functions.
3. Due to the unique nature of the organization’s standing as of October 15, 2007, and in order to ensure consistency in the forthcoming transition period, a designated group of students already active in Respect functions shall nominate candidates for the executive positions.
4. Each Director shall be in charge of one of the three following functions:
o Dialogue and meetings
o Service and policy
o Communication
5. Each Director shall have the power to appoint committees, both formal and informal, which shall consist of members of Respect Mississippi, to help perform their assigned function.
6. The executive group of Directors, by consensus, has the power to appoint ad hoc committees to organize events or perform specific functions.
7. Any tasks not falling under the direct responsibilities of a Director (see point 3) shall be assigned to a Director by a consensus of the executive group of Directors. The Director assigned to this task shall have the power to delegate the task to a member if necessary. Examples of such tasks include overseeing Respect Mississippi's finances or membership roles.
8. In April of 2008, interested members shall convene to review the effectiveness of the aforementioned structure. Special consideration shall be given to changing the assignment of the three Directors to the following functions:
o Dialogue and meetings
o Service
o Policy
9. Respect Mississippi shall go about recruiting an officer or influential member of other campus organizations to sit as a member of the Respect Mississippi Advisory Board. The Advisory Board shall be established to provide a space for dialogue and event coordination among critical campus organizations. Organizations holding a seat on the Advisory Board should be organizations established to promote diversity or tolerance or capable of effecting change in the promotion of diversity and tolerance. Examples of potential organizations to hold seats include the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the Gay Straight Alliance (GSA), the Black Student Union (BSU), the Associated Student Body (ASB), the Interfraternity Council (IFC), the Panhellenic Council, and the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). The estab lishment of the Advisory Board shall be considered a long-term goal of Respect Mississippi.
