Soldier dies abruptly overseas
The Oxford community continues to mourn the death of local soldier, 1st Lt. Donald Carwile, who died August 15 in the Wardak Province of Afghanistan. He was 29.
According to a press release by the U.S. Department of Defense, Carwile was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 516th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division Fort Campbell, Ky.

Forbes places UM at 23 for annual U.S. 'Best Colleges' national ranking
Forbes Magazine recognized the University of Mississippi among the nation's top 25 public universities in its inaugural ranking of the nation's colleges and universities. Forbes ranked Ole Miss 23rd out of approximately 4,000 public institutions in the country.

Debate topic change not to affect UM plans
The format of the 2008 presidential debate to be held at the University of Mississippi Sept. 26 has changed to a debate on foreign policy and national security.
The announcement comes despite the fact that the Commission on Presidential Debates initially announced the Ole Miss debate would involve domestic issues.

Ford Center parking closes until after debate
According to Interim Provost Morris Stocks, the parking lot at the Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts will close Monday and remain off limits for public parking until after the 2008 presidential debate.
"The presidential debate is transforming our campus in many positive ways," Stocks said.

Super-senioritis strikes now
I have become the much maligned fifth year senior. Gone are the nerves and anticipation so obvious in the class of 2012. Today is a day just like any other. Except that it isn't.
My freshman year was a joy to be free of worries like finding a real job and potentially chasing it across the country.

Now that Sen. Biden is Sen. Obama's vice-presidential running mate, the Democrats can now steam full ahead in their campaign. Everyone, including the media, has stated that Biden was picked because of his foreign policy credentials and his seniority in Washington, being one of Delaware's Senators for 35 years.

Soccer suffers double OT loss
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Kellie Walker's double overtime goal in the 108th minute lifted Western Kentucky to a 2-1 victory over the Ole Miss soccer team in the season opener Friday evening from WKU Soccer Complex.
Walker netted the game-winning goal on a one touch shot following a free kick off the foot of teammate Hayley Marsh.

Student football tickets on sale today
Student season football tickets go on sale Monday morning at 8:30 a.m. at the ticket windows in the Tad Smith Coliseum.
According to the assistant athletics director of ticket operations Sans Russell, student season tickets are $49 each and may be purchased by any student with a valid ID.

Closing arguments to begin in Draper case
Closing arguments are scheduled to begin Wednesday concerning the federal case against refrigeration company sales representative James Draper.
The indictment against Draper said he assisted failed Mississippi Beef plant owner Richard Hall in defrauding the state of Mississippi out of $187,725.

Support increasing for UM gay and lesbian community
The University of Mississippi has greatly changed its attitude towards members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transsexual (LGBT) community over the past ten years, Allies administrator and Gay-Straight Alliance advisor Kevin Cozart said.
"There is still a lot of work to do as far as the LGBT community being included in things," Cozart said.

Wednesday execution pending for murderer at state penitentiary
Barring a reprieve from the U.S. Supreme Court or clemency from the governor, Dale Leo Bishop will be executed Wednesday for participating in the claw hammer beating death of one of his friends.
The execution is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman.

ASB Summer Update
The ASB has been working hard through the summer for the students of Ole Miss. With July classes coming to an end, planning for the upcoming fall semester is still going strong. From more Scantron vending machines and the Oxford-University Transit system to the newly-christened Magnolia Bowl, we have been working tirelessly to ensure the students remain the top priority on the UM campus.

McCain and Obama tithe for America
While the Associated Press is typically a more respected news source than the Associated Baptist Press, when it comes to the 2008 presidential elections, the roles may be reversed. Front running candidates Barack Obama and John McCain have agreed to meet in a megachurch August 16th for a non-debate moderated by Rick Warren, of The Purpose Driven Life fame.
